The "Real Food" Revolution: Why We Ditched Processed Treats
As founders of this brand and parents to two girls, an American Bully nearing her sixth birthday and a spunky Boston Terrier puppy under a year old, we have spent years obsessing over the back of ingredient labels. We have seen firsthand how the right fuel transforms a dog at different life stages. Our senior Bully has more stamina on the trail now than she did at three. Our Boston puppy is growing at a steady, healthy rate without the bloat or itchy skin that often plagues young dogs on commercial diets. The pet food industry has spent decades convincing us that highly processed, shelf stable nuggets and colorful treats are balanced nutrition. We are here to tell you that this is a lie designed for corporate convenience, not canine health.
At Feral Dogs, we believe in a real food revolution. This is not just a marketing slogan for us. It is a return to the ancestral diet that dogs evolved to thrive on long before big corporations started using corn and soy as cheap fillers.
The Problem With Processed "Natural" Treats
Walk down any pet store aisle and you will see bags covered in pictures of fresh meat and vegetables. However, when you turn that bag over, the reality is often grim. You will find things like meat by products, animal digest, and artificial flavorings. Even the treats labeled as natural often contain high amounts of glycerin, pea protein, or synthetic preservatives like BHA and BHT.
These ingredients are not food. They are industrial additives used to keep treats soft or to make them smell appealing to humans. For a growing puppy like our Boston, these fillers can lead to systemic inflammation and metabolic issues during critical developmental windows. Research published in Nature Scientific Reports suggests that puppyhood diet is a primary risk factor for adult onset chronic gastrointestinal disease. When we saw the science, we realized we could not keep feeding our girls those mystery ingredients.
Biological Needs vs. Industrial Convenience
Dogs are scavengers and hunters by nature. Their digestive tracts are designed to process animal proteins and fats with incredible efficiency. They do not have a biological requirement for the refined carbohydrates and sugars found in most commercial treats. In fact, many common additives are known allergens that cause the chronic ear infections and hot spots so many dog parents struggle to manage.
Our older American Bully used to struggle with occasional stiffness after a long hike. Once we tightened up her diet and focused on whole, single ingredient proteins, her recovery time plummeted. This is why our Single Ingredient Treats are just that. No fillers, no natural flavors, and absolutely no chemicals. We use processes like freeze drying and dehydration because they preserve the nutritional integrity of the meat without the need for toxic preservatives.
The Power of Single Ingredient Nutrition
The beauty of single ingredient food is transparency. When you give your dog a piece of freeze dried beef liver or a dehydrated sweet potato, you know exactly what is entering their system. This is crucial for dogs with allergies or for a puppy whose digestive system is still maturing. If your dog has a reaction, you can easily identify the culprit because there are no hidden proprietary blends to hide behind.
A study featured in Frontiers in Microbiology highlights how switching from a processed kibble diet to a nature like raw meat diet shifts the canine gut microbiota closer to that of their wild ancestors. By focusing on real food, you are not just giving your dog a snack. You are providing the building blocks for healthy joints, a shiny coat, and a robust immune system. Our girls need that high quality protein to stay active, whether we are training the puppy in the backyard or taking our Bully on a rugged mountain trek.
Joining the Revolution
Ditching processed treats is the easiest way to start your dog on a journey toward being biologically fulfilled. You will notice the difference in their energy levels, the quality of their stools, and even their breath. We did not start Feral Dogs to fit in with the status quo. We started it to provide the kind of nutrition that we demand for our own girls.
Every time you choose a real food option over a processed one, you are voting for your dog's long term health. You are choosing to treat them like the capable, athletic animals they are rather than fragile pets. Our mission is to make that choice easy for every member of the pack.
